The License for Learning auto tag is available for purchse at all local Volsuia County tag offices.  FUTURES receives $30 from each purchase.  Put Volusia County students on the road to success - buy a License for Learning Tag today!

How do you buy or renew the License for Learning tag?

1.  Go to

2.  Select Fundraising Events - go to the bottom of the License for Learning page and click on link.

3.  Simply select the option to purchase a tag on the webpage "How to Buy the Plate."


Like our Facebook Page and tell us what you're working on!  We love feedback on your programs, mini-grant projects, suggestions, ideas and anything else you'd like to share.  Three (3) Lucky "Likers" who post on our wall will be chosen to receive a $10 gift certificate to Chick-Fil-a.


Educators Working Together

If you are a District employee consider payroll deduction!  Every gift through payroll deduction helps FUTURES to reach its goals in the areas of mini-grants and other areas of classroom support.  You can even make a one-time donation (directly to FUTURES).  A gift of $1, $2, or $5 per pay truly makes a difference when you consider the size of our workforce.  Everyone who signs up receives a coupon for a Chick-fil-A sandwich.  Those donating $25 or more in total will receive a special gift at the end of the school year.  Don't be left out!  For more information, call 255-6475, extension 50730 or 50723, and a form will be provided to you.  You may also email or


Did you know that by supporting the Take Stock in Children Scholarship program, you do more than just provide college tuition.  The students are paired with an adult mentor who helps them navigate school grades 9-12 and even into college.  This is one of the best stay in school programs available.

Teacher of the Year 2013
Dear FUTURES Supporter,

Leslie Birney, a 4th grade teacher from Citrus Grove Elementary, is Volusia County Schools' Teacher of the Year for 2013.

The announcement was made on February 10th at the Teacher of the Year banquet presented by Halifax Health, and co-hosted by FUTURES Foundation and the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce. The celebration was attended by over 900 friends of public education.

"Our board and our chamber feel strongly that our teachers deserve praise, validation and celebration as a special group of professionals," said Bobby Thigpen, FUTURES President.

Tomorrow's Leaders Program

Tomorrow's Leaders students completed their third seminar, "Government-Diversity" in January.  They are gearing up for Seminar 4 - "Criminal Justice" scheduled on February 16th.

At Sweetwater Elementary School, Christine Kaney, primary teacher informed that FUTURES grant funding enabled her to purchase hands-on math activities and games.  She added that the students were so excited to learn, talk and do math!

At Campbell Middle School, Maria O'Brien, media teacher informed
that students were excited to sign up for "Spartans Read MP3s Book Club!  A total of 44 students signed up on the first day!

At Manatee Cove Elementary School, Susan VanEngen, primary teacher informed that under the program "Manatee Publishers" the students have Pen Pals from Deland, Islamorado, Arizona, Hawaii,
and Wisconsin!

At Ormond Beach Middle School, Media Teacher Sharon Martin informed that FUTURES grant funding enabled her to purchase over 300 more Sunshine State Titles, thus allowing more students to read the books and participate in the Voting Day in April.  She added that more students were reading all of the 15 titles and will be eligible to attend the "Reading Celebration Luncheon," sponsored by the media center in April.

Ms. Martin further stated that another program the school was promoting using FUTURES Mini-Grant funding was the "Breakfast of Champions" program.  This program allows students in the lower quartile who have improved in reading to enjoy breakfast and a special program every nine weeks.

Take Stock in Children

TSIC Mentor Tony Tussing was named "Take Stock in Children Mentor of the Year."  James Carter, his mentee states, "In my two years of being a part of Take Stock in Children I have learned many things particularly from my mentor Mr. Tony Tussing.  Mr. Tussing and I meet once a week and every time we speak he gives me a better insight on not only school but life as well.  He has taught me how to be patient and to always go that extra step to reach my goal of getting a college education.  I have learned more from him in the past two years than I have from anyone else in my life.  I am grateful to have such a prestigious mentor and look forward to these last two years of him mentoring me through my high school graduation."  Congratulations!

Island Time Arrives April 27, 2012

Plans for the next Caribbean Party are well under way, and new sponsorship opportunities are among those plans. Sponsorship levels are as follows:

Principals Level - $1,000
Teachers Level - $500

Sponsors will be acknowledged at "FUTURES Caribbean Party" and opportunities to display your company's logo will be featured on our website, e-newsletter, and in the slide show.

The Caribbean Party is always a fun, casual evening for supporters of Volusia County Schools to gather, celebrate and enjoy fine food and drink.
