Mini-Grant Update
Sponsored by FUTURES

As the school year concludes, Mini-Grant projects have come to an end. These projects and programs were funded by FUTURES. Here are a few of the final projects:

At Spruce Creek High School, Heather Alexander non-core teacher informed that the Rose Ball Ceramic Mural project had been completed.  She informed that the 144 Pottery I students created this ceramic tile mural to reflect what they had learned about their community's Rose Bay estuary habitat.

At the District Science Office, teachers are instructed on how to design and assemble a solar car and solar cooker. Teachers learned to improvise and understand what their students would be going through during the learning process. These projects were funded by Progress Energy and Florida Power & Light.

Tomorrow's Leaders Class of 2011 selected to receive scholarships

FUTURES will award $1,500 scholarships to two seniors, Caitlyn Zona of New Smyrna Beach High School and Jacqueline Caro of T. Dewitt Taylor High School.  The students were awarded the scholarship based on grades, involvement in school and community activities, leadership roles, goals and ambition, and financial need.  Caitlyn will be attending the University of Central Florida and Jacqueline will be attending University of Florida.

Through this scholarship FUTURES is assisting Tomorrow's Leaders graduates in furthering their education and in preparing for future leadership roles in the community.  The Tomorrow's Leaders program exposes high school juniors to the problems, resources, and programs influencing the direction of Volusia County's growth, and grooms these students for future leadership positions within the community.

For more information, contact Kelly Ferguson, FUTURES, at (386) 255-6475, extension 50730.

First Year Teacher Award

  Winners for 2012 Announced

On Tuesday, May 8th, FUTURES and Volusia County Schools honored their First Year Teachers.  The 27 nominees were recommended by their principals.  To be considered for this recognition, the nominees were to have earned a baccalaureate college degree, start a full-time teacher career on or after January 1, 2011, performed outstandingly based on standards established by the school district, and nominated by their principals.  Their enthusiasm, energy and vision are important elements of the teacher profession, and they are wonderful advocates for Volusia County Schools.  We applaud them all for their success as teachers!

A selection committee reviewed the nominees' applications and selected the first Year Teacher winners for 2012.  This year's recipients were Patricia Hutchinson, primary teacher at Citrus Grove Elementary School and Brejoya Perry, a non-core teacher at Deltona High School.
