FUTURES Delivers for Education
Dear FUTURES Supporter,
FUTURES has been quite busy since the beginning of the school year to provide programs for Volusia County Schools' students and staff. This includes:
- Committing to distribute $60,000 in mini-grants to classroom teachers the end of this month. 270 grant applications have been received totaling almost $280,000 in funding requests.
- Implementing FUTURES School Match program, to fund over $90,000 in school grants supporting academic achievement.
- Organizing an Educator Intern shadowing program pairing community leaders with district or school-based administrators this month.
- Continuing to oversee the progress of 133 students in our Take Stock in Children college scholarship program, and keeping in contact with the 64 former students who have graduated from college.
Tomorrow's Leaders Program
At each seminar the students are instructed on the qualities associated with being a successful leader, such as goal setting, communicating effectively, time management, and human behavior and motivation.
Tomorrow's Leaders is a leadership training opportunity for high school juniors. Through a five month program of high structured activities, participants become familiar with current issues, community resources, and other factors influencing the direction of Volusia County's future. Participation in Tomorrow's Leaders prepares students for constructive leadership and responsible participation in the affairs of Volusia County.
From October through March, students are involved in a series of seminars and a workshop. Topics selected will be pertinent to Volusia County and will cover such areas as:
- Criminal Justice system
- Health/Social Services
- Economic Development/Education
Applications are now available on FUTURES website.
